Candidates for Ortho-K

Are you struggling with shortsightedness or having trouble seeing clearly? Do you want to improve your vision without having eye surgery? As unbelievable as this idea sounds, it is a reality for many folks.

This groundbreaking quick fix known as orthokeratology (Ortho-K) uses tailored contact lenses to improve eyesight. It involves putting on gas-permeable lenses at night to restructure your cornea as you sleep. After waking up, you take out the lenses and have a clearer vision for up to 24 or 36 hours. That said, your eye doctor will likely prescribe this solution if you qualify for it.

Who Is Ortho-K For?

Ortho-K is a viable option for anybody at any age. Children as young as seven years old can wear Ortho-K lenses. They can live their lives and participate in activities without eyesight issues restraining them.

Ortho-K is also perfect for physically active people who cannot put on eyewear such as contact lenses during sports. The same applies to older patients, even those nearing or past the age of 60. The key, however, is knowing the tasks that come with wearing Ortho-K lenses.

Characteristics That Make One a Candidate for Ortho-K

  •  Ortho-K is available to nearsighted people (a condition called myopia) and needs a curative eye prescription fit for -6.00.
  • Advanced myopia puts those affected at a higher lifetime danger of developing other illnesses. These illnesses include glaucoma and a detached retina. Studies show that Ortho-K therapy minimizes the rate of nearsighted progression in children.
  •   Patients (both children and adults) who have experienced a steep upsurge in myopia can benefit from Ortho-K treatment.
  •   Ortho-K lenses work to correct long- or farsightedness (hyperopia) by using converging lenses to enable a longsighted individual to see objects clearly.
  •    Presbyopia is an eye condition that prevents the cornea from changing shape as effortlessly as it once did. Presbyopia is common among people over 40 years old and gets worse until around the age of 65.
  •  Patients with low, moderate, and high astigmatism may respond well to Ortho-K lenses. However, patients with mild-to-moderate astigmatism may see better results than those with severe-to-extreme astigmatism.
  •  Patients ineligible for refractive eye surgeries can consider Ortho-K, as it is a reversible, reliable, and safe substitute for surgery.
  •  Patients afraid of surgery can opt for Ortho-K treatment, as it does not involve any surgical intervention.

What to Expect

Whereas you can experience better vision after a night of using Ortho-K lenses, it may take two or more weeks for your vision to improve markedly. You may also have to wear a series of Ortho-K pairs before finding the desired corneal shape and prescription and up to three pairs once you have to get the best visual improvement. Correcting your vision from this corneal restructuring technology is reversible. However, it can last if you use the lenses as instructed.
