How Do I Know Which Contact Lenses Are Right for Me?

Contacts have come a long way in the last few years. The thin lenses fit over the cornea, providing an effective tool to correct vision problems. Technology advancements have led to the availability of contact lens options to cater to different needs. Depending on various factors, you can choose lenses that are perfect for you.

Sharpest Vision Possible

If your reason for getting contacts is to enjoy the sharpest vision possible, you can choose rigid gas-permeable contact lenses. GP or RGP lenses are made using a harder material than regular soft contacts. The polished surface provides great optical qualities.

You Have Astigmatism

If you are astigmatic, you have uneven or irregular corneas. You can benefit from toric contact lenses or gas permeable lenses. The special toric lenses have features that help correct blurry vision due to the uneven corneal curvature. The contacts work with the eyeball shape and are available for extended wear or as daily disposables.

You Want Comfort

Soft contact lenses are ideal for you if your primary consideration when choosing contacts is comfort. While gas permeable lenses often require a period of adjusting that can take several weeks, soft lenses are immediately comfortable. For added comfort, choose daily disposable soft contact lenses. The material allows oxygen to reach the cornea, reducing dry eye issues.

Low Maintenance Contacts

Daily disposables are a good option for people who do not want to bother with routine care of contact lenses. The contact lenses are worn once and then disposed of. You do not need to worry about contact lens solutions and the daily cleaning routine. The lenses offer great comfort, and there is less chance of infection.

You Have Presbyopia

If you experience vision change as you get older, you may need to change your lenses. Many people over 40 develop presbyopia. The best lenses to deal with the condition are bifocal or multifocal contacts. The lenses help restore vision, eliminating or reducing the need for driving or reading glasses. You can also talk to the doctor about monovision contacts.

Contacts for Occasional Use

You can choose soft contact lenses if you prefer wearing glasses and only need contacts occasionally. The lenses are comfortable and ideal for wearing during sports. You can wear contacts when you have a social event where you do not want to wear glasses. GP lenses must be worn daily to maintain comfort. Silicone-based soft contacts are highly breathable for more comfort.

Sharp Vision and Comfort

If you want both sharp vision and comfort, you may find that GP lenses are not for you. In this case, you can get hybrid contact lenses. These lenses have a GP center that provides clarity and a soft lens “skirt” to enhance comfort.

The best way to determine the contact lenses that are right for you is by getting an eye exam. A contact lens fitting will help determine the lenses that provide the best results, depending on your vision. Many contact lenses offer UV protection. You can also get ortho-k contact lenses that help reshape your cornea.
